Philippines 3rd Telco Player ‘DITO’

The House of Representatives granted the 25-year legislative franchise for DITO Telecommunity owned by President Rodrigo Duterte’s close friend, Dennis Uy. Lawmakers voted 240 affirmatives and 7 negatives with no abstention. The decision of the House made DITO be the country’s third major telecommunication player, to construct, install, establish, operate, and maintain wired and/or wireless telecommunication systems. Once allowed to operate, it will be expected to break the duopoly for telco dominated by Smart Communication owned by Manny Pangilinan and Globe Telecom of the Ayala’s. In President Duterte’s fifth  State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27, he said that if Smart and Globe will not improve their customer services, he might be forced to expropriate all of their assets before the year ends.
